On November 11, 2019 Giorgio Fabio Colombo, Associate Professor of Law at Nagoya University Graduate School of Law, conducted a one-day training on international commercial arbitration with a selection of Pakistani judges at the premises of the Federal Judicial Academy of Pakistan in Islamabad.The training was held under the auspices of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, the Federal Judicial Academy of Pakistan, EURO-EXPERT – ERC funded project and Cultural Expertise for Judicial Education in Pakistan and Indonesia – GCRF project. The attendance was composed by more than 30 judges from various provinces of Pakistan, and it was divided into a theoretical introduction and a group discussion session.The day was closed by a ceremony with the Hon'ble Mr. Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Senior Puisne Judge, Acting Chief Justice, Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Mohammad Raheem, Secretary of Law and Justice Commission Pakistan, and Prof. Dr. Livia Holden (Oxford University).
From November 6 to 8th, 2019, Dean Suzuki made a business trip to Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, together with some of his colleagues of GSL. The primary purpose was to attend the following four events. The Tenth Anniversary Ceremony of Nagoya University Uzbekistan Office in Uzbekistan A ceremony for doctoral degree conferment and the new entrance of the Asia Satellite Campus Institute (ASCI) A doctoral degree award was given to Mr. Alimajanov Sardor, who completed a program at ASCI in September 2019. We also celebrated the entrance of Ms. Abulkhasan Dilfuza Habibullaevna, who joined the ASCI's program from October 2019. Visit to Tashkent State University of Law (TSUL) We visited the university and had a meeting with its executives. We thanked them for their support to the Center for Japanese Law Education and Research located on the university's campus and confirmed that the two universities would strengthen cooperative relations. We held a seminar on legal education and research in which many teachers and students of TSUL participated. The Tenth Anniversary Ceremony of the Uzbek Branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association (NUAL Uzbekistan) On Friday, November 8, 2019, a commemorative seminar hosted by the Uzbek Branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association (NUAL) was held at Charvak, a resort area located about an hour away from Tashkent. More than thirty alumni gathered for the seminar despite it being a weekday. All the participants actively exchanged opinions and information regarding the recent situation of Nagoya University and the graduates. At the same time, it was decided that the President of the Uzbek Branch would be replaced by Mr. Burhanov Akmal from Mr. Merganov Bakhodir (both are graduates of GSL). Mr. Akmal expressed his aspiration about future activities of the Branch and received enthusiastic applause from all the participants. Visit of President of Uzbekistan to Japan and Nagoya University After the above business trip, Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, came to Japan and visited Nagoya University on December 18, 2019. A ceremony to award an honorary doctoral degree to the President and his commemorative lecture were held on our campus. In the wake of the Presidential visit, a conference with the title "Uzbekistan-Nagoya Forum in Nagoya" was held at the Asian Law Exchange Plaza of GSL. It was co-sponsored by the Nagoya Uzbekistan Friendship Association, the Uzbekistan-Nagoya Academic Forum, the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Japan, and GSL. In this conference, young Uzbek researchers who were researching in Japan gave presentations. These events symbolized the profound relationship between Uzbekistan and Nagoya University, including GSL.
Dean Suzuki and Lecturer Okuda moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on August 10. Judge Leang Chhon, our first-year Master's student who happened to be temporarily back in Cambodia, kindly attended them. In the evening, Dean Suzuki held a reunion with their former students, Dr. Sovath Phin, Dr. Kork Boren, and Mr. Phan Daro, and caught up on the new lives. Dean Suzuki was impressed that they are all in influential positions at a university, a law firm, and a financial institution.On Sunday, August 11, Dean Suzuki and Lecturer Okuda interviewed two government officials (Mr. Nen Chansamuthone of the Ministry of Commerce and Mr. Lay Leangseng of the Ministry of Justice). They were going to enroll in GSL from the coming October as Cambodian JDS Fellows.The Cambodian branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association (NUAL) invited them to the reunion in the evening. More than ten graduates from GSL attended it, including Mr. Lim Lyhong, the Branch's President. All the participants were working in high positions at universities or national institutions in Cambodia. So again, they were able to see fruitful results of GSL efforts toward human resource development.On Monday, August 12, they visited the National University of Management (NUM). They had a meeting with President Dr. Hor Peng, Ms. POK Phearoun, Lecturer of the university who got an LL.M.(Comparative Law) degree from our GSL in 2011, and other university staff. President Hor Peng was the first Cambodian student to GSL, completing the doctoral program with a Ph.D. degree. After the meeting, Dean Suzuki gave a lecture to about 70 students of the NUM.After visiting the NUM, they met Honorable Yuok Ngoy, Deputy Minister of Education, NUM's President Hor Peng, and Vice-President LY Sok Heng. Honorable Ngoy is a former President of the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) and served as the counterpart at the beginning of the negotiation for cooperation between GSL and RULE.Then they visited JICA's legal and judicial system development office. Luckily, they could meet Mr.Chheourn Kuyeng, a senior legal officer of JICA, and two senior judges, Mr.Synn Sovannrath and Mr.Chhe Vivathanak, who were all graduates of GSL. The judges were attending a seminar for local judges at that time.After the visit to JICA, they visited the RULE. RULE is the partner of an academic exchange agreement and supports the Center for Japanese Law Education and Research (CJL). They met Rector Dr. Luy Channa and Professor Hap Phalthy (who got a doctoral degree from GSL in 2010 and is now in charge of the Graduate Program of RULE). Furthermore, they met Ms. Dany Channraksmey Chhoukroth (who got a Master's degree from GSL in 2015) in charge of the English Language Based Bachelor of Law Program-ELBBL.On Tuesday, August 13, they met with Dr. Phin Sovath, who used to be a doctoral student under Dean Suzuki's supervision. He is now a professor at Pannasastra University as well as a senior partner at a law firm. So first, they visited his law firm, Bun & Associates. They could also see two associates, Ms.Yin Socheat and Ms. Sin Sokanha, both graduates, from our Master's program.Then they moved to Panannastra University and met Professor Kong Phallack, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Public Policy, one of our first Cambodian students.After the meeting, Dean Suzuki gave a lecture on intellectual property law to the students of Pannasastra University.
Professor Masabumi Suzuki, Dean of the Graduate School of Law (GSL), made a business trip to Thailand on August 8 -10, 2019. Ms. Saori Okuda, Lecturer of the International Students' Support Office, accompanied him.In August 2019, they visited several organizations and universities in Thailand t closely related to GSL to exchange views and plans about cooperative relationships and met with graduates who had studied at GSL. It is particularly pleasing to see the graduates playing active roles in their respective fields back in their home countries. GSL had put a lot of effort into the past twenty-five years or so.They went to Bangkok from August 8 to 10, 2019. First, they visited the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand and had a meeting with the Secretary-General, Judge Sarawut Benjakul. They discussed building a cooperative relationship with a focus on the training of judges.Then Dean Suzuki gave a lecture on court procedures in Japan, which was broadcasted through the Internet to the courts all over Thailand.GSL started a relationship with the Thai Judiciary by accepting Thai judges in our School in recent years. Dr. Benjawan Tangsatapornpan, who had just returned to Thailand with a Ph.D. from our School, is one of such judges, and she kindly took care of us during the stay. It is of great significance for GSL to establish and strengthen a close relationship with Thailand, whose relationship with Japan is becoming even more profound.Next, they visited the Faculty of Law of Chulalongkorn University. The university has an all-faculty exchange agreement with Nagoya University. They met with Dean Pareena Srivanit and confirmed a cooperative relationship between the two faculties. Chulalongkorn University is Thailand's oldest and very prestigious national university, and GSL looks forward to expanding exchanges in both research and education between the two faculties.They also had a reunion with some of the Thai graduates of Nagoya University. There were seven graduates, six of whom were former students of GSL, and one was a graduate from the Graduate School of International Development (GSID). After graduation, they returned to Thailand and were active in professional institutions such as universities, international organizations, and think tanks, making extensive use of their expertise.
