NUAL GSL Vietnam Branch Big Gathering: Cerebrates Ms. Oanh Đặng Hoàng!

On September 21, 2018, the NU Alumni Vietnam Branch celebrated Ms. Oanh Đặng Hoàng, a graduate of GSL, of her appointment in April 2018 as Vice Minister of Ministry of Justice of Vietnam. Our school, CALE, and the NU Vietnam office will conduct GSL Vietnam Alumni activities and further develop the unity between GSL alumni and GSL!

Bilateral agreement with the Department of Law of Roma Tre University in Rome (Italy)

On September 14, 2018, a delegation from Nagoya University Graduate School of Law led by the Dean, Prof. Masabumi Suzuki, took part in the ceremony of signing a bilateral agreement with the Department of Law of Roma Tre University in Rome (Italy). This agreement is the fruit of a cooperation started in 2013.The ceremony took place in the office of the Dean at Roma Tre, Prof. Giovanni Serges. Moreover, given the significance of the agreement, Prof. Suzuki was also received by the President of Roma Tre, Prof. Luca Pietromarchi.Roma Tre is the youngest State university in Rome, but it is probably the most dynamic. Its Department of Law has been selected as one of the "Excellent Departments" under a new program launched by the Italian Ministry of Education. Only 15 Law Departments in Italy have attained such status.Roma Tre has a wide offer of classes conducted in English. Recently it launched a program named "Studying Law at Roma Tre" offering 20 full courses in English and several exchange opportunities (for students as well as for researchers).This bilateral agreement will allow students from Nagoya University to spend up to an entire semester at Roma Tre; likewise, students from Roma Tre will be able to attend Nagoya University's Graduate School of Law.The agreement is not limited to students, as it is also specifically intended to foster research cooperation between the two institutions.

NUAL Mongolia Branch Work Report on "Good Leadership in Society"

NUAL Mongolia branch in collaboration with Graduate School of Law of Nagoya University has successfully hosted the very first international conference of Nagoya University graduates on the theme of “Good Leadership in Society” at Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar on 14th of August 2018.The event brought together graduates who are now distinguished scholars, judges, and practitioners both in private and public sectors in Mongolia, as well as Professor Okuda Saori, Professor-emeritus Sugiura Kazutaka (Deputy chairman of Alumni Association of Nagoya University Graduate School of Law) and Ito Yoriko, teacher at Research and Education Center for Japanese law, the National University of Mongolia (Law School).Professor Masabumi Suzuki, Dean of the Graduate School of Law, Nagoya University, by his letter addressed to the Conference, congratulated to all the people involved in the holding of the International Conference on the theme of "Good Leadership in Society and expressed his heartfelt respect to the initiative of the graduates gathered under Mongolia Branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association.Honored lawyer and academician, professor-emeritus S. Narangerel noted in his opening remark that “the right leadership and role model behavior of the university graduates are important for country prosperity and growth”.Conference attendees shared their intellectual contributions and ideas on:a) Good leadership and contribution to our society (in addition to individual achievements and carrier developments in academic/professional works),b) Nagoya University’s expectation of graduates’ role in society for academic, cultural and social issues and school program supporting this idea,c) NUAL Mongolia’s role and coordination to encourage, foster and promote close relations and ties among the alumni members, students and the university.As of March 2018, total of 101 Mongolian students have graduated from Nagoya University of which 41 graduates received master and doctorate degree on law.During the discussion held at the conference, NUAL Mongolia has agreed the following:• To host the first global meeting of NUAL branches of all other countries in Mongolia under the theme of "Good Leadership in Society" and further facilitate cooperation by taking initiatives to organize annual alumni meetings in different countries;• To prepare a series of historical publications for press on cooperation between Nagoya University and the National University of Mongolia (Law School);• To explore possibility to prepare and publish graduate research papers as references for new students and scholars;• To organize a academic competition among current Japan law students at National University of Mongolia (Law School) to offer financial assistance (tuition fee) to those with academic excellence;• To take initiatives to organize Japanese and Mongolian scholars and business forum and develop platform for joint cooperation and closer ties between Japanese and Mongolian people.All attendees received customized NUAL Mongolia Branch notebook and pen. The event was advertised in the local newspaper and online news site both prior to and following the conference. The conference took place from 9AM to 1:30PM.

Lecture on WGRP & Alumni Meet-up in Myanmar

Professor Matsuura gave a lecture, "Writing a Good Research Proposal (WGRP)" fisrt at Yangon in June 21, 2018 and in June 23 at Nay Pyi Taw.Yangon University graduate students enjoyed the lecture at Yangon Lecture.Graduate School of Law (GSL) Alumni members and prospective applicants to our school seriously listening to his lecture in June 23. 

IP lecture in China: Expectations for further academic exchange worldwide

On the evening of June 22, Professor Masabumi Suzuki delivered a lecture at Sun Yat-sen University (中山大学)of China upon the invitation of Professor Yang Li. The lecture concerns remedies for patent infringement, and garnered the attendance of judges, lawyers, scholars, and students. During the session, Professor Suzuki spoke on the Japanese courts’ position on injunctions and damages, while emphasizing on the different approaches to the standards for granting injunctive relief and calculation of damages. Serving as translators during the session are Qi Jun and Ziyan, both LL.D. students under Professor Suzuki’s supervision at Nagoya University. They did an excellent job in facilitating and contributing to the discussions. Given the proliferation of intellectual property rights in Asia, we look forward to furthering our cooperation and academic exchanges with other institutions.

Lecture on WGRP & Alumni Meet-up in Uzbekistan

Professor Matsuura Yashiharu Lecture on "Writing a Good Research Proposal (WGRP)", which becomes popular among alumni members, was given in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in May 17, 18, and 21, 2018 at our partner universities of Tashkent State University of Law (TSUL) and University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), and also at our Uzbekistan Nagoya University (NU) Office. Totally 110 students, government officials and our alumni attended the lecture.

"Works-In-Progress Conference: IP Scholars Asia" in Singapore

On March 1-2, 2018, students of the Graduate School of Law (GSL) attended and presented at the "Works-In-Progress Conference: IP Scholars Asia," an international conference organized by the Singapore Management University School of Law with the support of institutions, including the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Trademark Association (INTA).The conference provided an opportunity for researchers from around the world to gather, present, and debate on recent issues on IP. This year, over 150 researchers participated in the third meeting of this annual conference. While presenters were mostly young researchers, senior researchers chaired panels and took part in debate during the plenary sessions. Ms. Rebecca Ferderer (USA) and Ms. Suthinee Palagawong Na Ayutthaya (Thailand) of GSL participated and gave presentations, while Professor Masabumi Suzuki chaired a session on patent law. Professor Sovath Phin of Paññāsāstra University (Cambodia), who earned his Ph.D. from GSL, was also among the presenters. IP research is an ever-evolving field characterized by increasing international interaction, and we are proud to have our students and alumni actively engaged in international discussions to help shape the future of IP law.

Nagoya University Vis Moot Team gets the First Place in the 11th pre-moot Japan

A Team composed by four students from different English-language programs at Nagoya University School of Law/Graduate School of Law secured the First Place in the English section of the 11th pre-moot Japan, which was held in Doshisha University, Kyoto, on February 17, 2018.One of the Team members also received the award as Best Oralist.This year's performance confirms Nagoya as one of the strongest participants from Japan to the Vis (East) Moot competition, the most prestigious commercial arbitration moot for university students. The final competition will take place in Hong Kong, 11-18 March, 2018.In line with previous experiences, the Team reflects the truly international spirit of Nagoya University: it gathers students from China, India, Japan, and Vietnam. Coaches are from Cambodia and Uzbekistan.
